The hip is the largest weight-bearing joint in the body, playing a crucial role in supporting movement and stability. Structurally, it is a ball-and-socket joint, designed to provide a wide range of motion while withstanding the stresses of daily activities and physical exertion.
At the core of this joint is the femoral head, the rounded top portion of the thigh bone, which fits snugly into the acetabulum, a cup-shaped socket in the pelvis. This intricate design allows for seamless movement while maintaining the joint’s stability. Both the femoral head and the acetabulum are coated with a layer of smooth, resilient cartilage. This cartilage acts as a cushion, absorbing impact and reducing friction to facilitate smooth, pain-free movement.
Surrounding the acetabulum is the labrum, a rim of specialized cartilage that plays a vital role in joint stability. The labrum deepens the socket, creating a more secure fit for the femoral head and enhancing the joint’s ability to handle dynamic movements.
The hip’s stability and mobility are further supported by a complex network of ligaments and muscles. These structures work together to maintain alignment, control movement, and protect the joint from injury.
When issues arise in the hip joint, such as cartilage damage, labral tears, or impingement, they can significantly impact mobility and quality of life. In these cases, hip arthroscopy is minimally invasive surgical procedure—may be used to diagnose and treat various conditions. This technique allows surgeons to examine the joint with a small camera and treat problems through tiny incisions, reducing recovery time and preserving the joint’s natural structure.
